Cloud Adoption in SMEs: Opportunities and Barriers

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly exploring cloud computing as a means to enhance operational efficiency, reduce IT costs, and compete in digital markets. Despite the growing availability of cloud services tailored for SMEs, adoption rates remain inconsistent due to a range of technological, financial, and organizational barriers. This paper investigates the opportunities and barriers faced by SMEs in adopting cloud computing. It explores how cloud technology enables agility, scalability, and innovation, while also highlighting concerns such as data security, vendor lock-in, and lack of technical expertise. Drawing from literature reviews, empirical studies, and SME case analysis, the paper presents a comprehensive framework to understand and navigate the cloud adoption journey for SMEs. Recommendations are provided to help policymakers and service providers better support SME cloud transitions.
