Cross-reference tables, commonly called XRef tables, are the quiet workhorses of nearly every SAP data migration project. They hold the mapping between a legacy key, such as an old customer, vendor, or material number, and its corresponding target key in the destination system. Despite their central role, XRef tables are frequently designed as an afterthought: built quickly to satisfy an immediate load requirement, rarely versioned, rarely governed, and rarely assessed as part of a program's formal readiness criteria
This article argues that XRef table design deserves the same systematic attention given to data quality, testing, and cutover planning, and presents a structured approach to XRef table redesign as a lever for improving overall data migration landscape readiness. It introduces a landscape readiness concept, catalogs common XRef design weaknesses, proposes five redesign principles, and lays out a four-phase systematic redesign methodology, supported throughout by simple diagrams and structured bullet-point guidance rather than dense data tables
The article closes with governance, validation, tooling, and implementation guidance, along with common pitfalls and best practices drawn from published data migration and data governance literature available prior to June 2022
